We have completed a comprehensive study of all commercially available grills to evaluate the dimensions. We concluded that 2 standard sizes will fit the majority of grills. We have also studied the internal structure of the grill to come up with a universal mounting system that allows you to adjust the height of the Lava Rock Grill Converter relative to the burners. The feet are also adjustable along the length and width, providing many positions to have the feet rest at the base of the grill to support the lava rock grill converter. There is also an option to rest the Lava Rock Grill Converter on the burners in some cases. Assembly is easy with written instructions provided with the product. In addition there is an instructional video on our website. Assembly time is approximately 20 minutes and then you are ready to fire up your upgraded grill!

Early grills were dominated by lava rock versions, however they were phased out over time and replaced by flavor bars and other technologies. The main reason cited was that lava rock grills had larger flare up potential. The Lava Rock Grill Converter addresses flare-ups with patented technology.
The Lava Rock Grill Converter is patent pending with technology that reduces flare-ups. We have conducted many trials using different types of food and have found that flare-ups are limited and are most prevalent when grilling meat that has a very high fat content. Regardless, the flare-ups are controllable because the Lava Rock Grill Converter enables you to grill with the burners set at the minimum setting, as it converts convection heat to radiant heat and the heat is more efficiently concentrated by the lava rock substrate.
Better tasting food, propane savings, the ability to grill in extreme cold weather, the ability to use wood chips to flavor food by placing it directly on the Lava Rock Grill Converter, better temperature control at lower temperatures, and the use of radiant heat versus convection heat.
Radiant heat allows the food to be cooked without drying it out, secondly as the fat drips out of meat during grilling, it lands on the hot rock surface and is released back into the meat. This also prevents the “propane taste” sometimes found when grilling on a standard propane grill.
We have conducted tests using thermocouples to compare heating performance of a standard propane grill versus a grill using the Lava Rock Grill Converter.
There are no products that convert a standard propane grill to a lava rock grill seamlessly like the Lava Rock Grill Converter.
It is possible to cut and weld a metal grate so that it fits in the bottom of your grill, thereby allowing you to place lava rocks on top of the grate. While this will enable you to use lava rocks, it will not be as effective as using the Lava Rock Grill Converter, as it does not have the proprietary technology provided by the Lava Rock Grill Converter.
There are major differences in lava rock, both in chemical composition and porosity. We have tested many samples and selected a source and grade of lava rock that is best suited for grilling in the Lava Rock Grill Converter.
